More room for the second look.

Offset is a place for considered writing and images about everyday culture. We are interested in what changes when a subject is given time.

Small subjects, substantial questions.

Culture is not only what is announced on a stage or hung on a wall. It also appears in how a street is used, how an object is made and how a familiar routine becomes visible to someone new.

Our editorial approach starts with a particular observation. We follow its context, speak to the people connected to it and look for an account that a reader can question as well as enjoy.

The editorial commitments.

Keep the context

Distinguish observation, interpretation and a statement from a source. Give readers enough information to understand the difference.

Respect the people

Discuss permission, attribution and the terms of participation. A subject's everyday life is not simply material to take.

Make room for correction

If a detail is wrong or a credit is missing, contact the editorial desk with the specific story and the information to review.

Keep the conversation open.

Questions about a story, a correction or a possible collaboration can begin in the same place.
